The second Hinterrhein Bridge supplements the existing, listed framework bridge and com-pletes the two-lane extension of the Chur-Tamins line. A slim steel bridge with a maximum span of 63m, it stretches over national road A13 and the Hinterrhein River. The railway and road infrastructure in operation during construction pose some big challenges for the con-struction process.
The design of the second Hinterrhein Bridge is an elegant, slender and contemporary answer to an extraordinary location with a variety of challenges. A slender steel trough with V-shaped struts rests on simple concrete pillars and abutments. The choice of materials for the new structure was guided by the historical old steel framework bridge. Low operating costs and durability are ensured by the materials used and careful design of the constructional details.
