Cantonal Hospital St. Gallen

1st Place in Competition

The extension to the Cantonal Hospital St. Gallen consists of two multi-storey ward buildings with nine and eleven storeys as well as a more extensive plinth with three storeys.

The buildings have one or two basement floors and an underground garage on seven levels is also planned in the middle part; this will be built by the top-down method (the construction work progressing from the top to bottom). The load-bearing structure - as is expedient for hospital buildings - will have a regular support grid pattern of 8.10m. The construction will be built largely with in-situ cast concrete; the supports and facade elements will be prefabricated. Its realisation is scheduled for 2015 to 2026. The size of the project, long construction period, central location of the extension between the nearby existing hospital buildings and the necessity of an uninterrupted operation of the hospital give rise to a number of highly complex technical and logistical challenges which we are happy to take up.
