Commendation for Seismic Award 2021
Restoration and refurbishment of the cantonal listed building on Zurich’s Paradeplatz.
With innovative reinforcement solutions developed specifically for the project, it was possible to preserve the historic supporting structure and make it suitable for future uses.
The seismic retrofitting of the listed building presented the architect and civil engineers with a special challenge. With an external steel sculpture, quasi as "art in construction", the seismic forces from the floor slabs were transferred into the building ground without affecting the historically valuable interior spaces. The slender, weakly reinforced joist slabs from the early days of reinforced concrete construction were strengthened with prestressed CFRP loops. The effectiveness of the newly developed reinforcement measure was verified and confirmed with a large-scale in situ test.
