Conversion of Toni-Areal, Zurich
1st Place in Competition
Good Building Award of the City of Zurich 2011 – 2015
Built for dairy processing, this industrial building was converted so as to create space for the Zurich University of the Arts, part of the Zurich University of Applied Sciences, and for 90 rental flats. To do this, new intermediate ceilings were put in and as many as 11 storeys added to the existing building.
Lightweight reinforced-concrete composite slabs were used to add the storeys and put the intermediate ceilings in the existing building. By consistently optimising the dead weight of the new structures, it was possible to largely dispense with reinforcing the existing support columns and foundation. The existing flat slabs had to be reinforced in places in connection with punch-throughs. In addition, by reinforcing the existing wall panels and installing addi-tional ones, the entire building complex was strengthened against seismic action. The existing boiler house was increased from a height of 36 m to a tower of 70 m. The vertical loads from the addition of storeys were transferred via table-leg girdering made of welded steel frames to a column grid of the existing building.
